We’re Kristen and Shaun Wilson, along with our three children, Arletta, Zeke, and Maple. Our story began in the little village of Holly, Michigan, a town affectionately known for its charming bed and breakfasts. Looking back, we sometimes wonder if growing up there quietly planted a seed we didn’t even know was there. Life eventually led us north, and Northern Michigan has been woven into our family’s story for more than two decades. For the last 13 years, we’ve proudly called beautiful Leelanau County home, where we’ve planted deep roots and fallen in love with this remarkable place.

For years, owning a bed and breakfast felt like a gentle whisper in the background of our lives. We loved welcoming people into our home, creating meaningful spaces, and dreaming about a place where others could truly slow down. Like many dreams, it was something we thought we’d get to “someday.”

Then a challenging season for our family gave us the courage to stop waiting.

While navigating unexpected health challenges with one of our children, we felt deeply convicted to stop waiting and begin building. We couldn’t change every circumstance, but we could choose to create something beautiful in the middle of it. Little by little, Rōming Roost became that place, a project that brought hope, purpose, and joy during a season that often felt heavy.

Rōming Roost is the result of our family’s shared gifts. Kristen has spent more than two decades teaching tennis while nurturing a love for wellness, hospitality, and creating spaces where people feel seen and cared for. Shaun is an incredibly talented craftsman whose vision and skill have transformed dreams into reality. Nearly everything you’ll see here, from our home and barns to the guest spaces, outbuildings, trails, and gathering areas has been thoughtfully built by Shaun’s own hands.

And while you’ll often meet Kristen or Shaun during your stay, Rōming Roost wouldn’t exist without Arletta, Zeke, and Maple. As a homeschooling family, we’ve built this dream together. Our kids help prepare guest rooms, assist with breakfast, care for the animals, tend the gardens, welcome guests, and love teaching visitors, especially children, about life on the farm.  Our hope is that from the moment you arrive, you’ll feel less like a guest and more like you’ve come home to a place where you truly belong.

Together, we’ve created a place that reflects the values we hold close: faith, hospitality, stewardship, simplicity, and community. It’s our prayer that everyone who visits leaves feeling genuinely cared for and inspired to embrace a slower, more intentional pace of life.

And if you happen to notice a little extra warmth around the property, some of it still belongs to our beloved mini Goldendoodle, Roxy. She faithfully loved everyone being she met for 17 wonderful years.  Her gentle spirit will always remain part of the heart of Rōming Roost.
